Joining Us

Easing inevitable first day nerves

Starting at the Pelican

Joining a new school can be very daunting but we make every effort to ensure that new pupils and their parents feel part of the school community before the first day of term.

Induction

Induction at The Perse Pelican begins in the term before your child starts at the School when the whole family is warmly encourage to come to our Summer Fete.  Following this all new children are invited to attend Move Up Morning with their new class teacher in their new classroom.  We also hold an evening for new parents where you will have the opportunity to meet parents of other children in your child’s class, ask questions and receive helpful information to smooth your child’s start at the School.

Nursery

Our aim in the first term is to provide a smooth transition into our Nursery for the whole family. Children are settled into school life gradually. During the first week of term the children visit the Nursery in small groups to have a two hour introductory session. Parents are encouraged to stay for the first session, but once their child is happy and settled, parents are welcome to leave. During this time the children will begin to find out about each other, explore their new environment, become comfortable with our typical routines and, most importantly, begin to make new friends.

Reception

For those children who join us in Reception much of the induction process is similar to those joining Nursery, although as our new children have usually been accustomed to attending a nursery previously, our timetable stays the same throughout the term.
