Perse Prep Inspiration Week sparks excitement in pupils

From the stage to the sports field, youngsters enjoyed a range of amazing activities during Perse Prep Inspiration Week.

Years 3 and 4 visited Cambridge University Botanic Garden to learn about the plants on show and sketching their favourites, and after finding about flora, Year 3 also discovered more about fauna with a fun trip to Shepreth Wildife Park.

A great time was had by Year 4 as they tried out the assault course at The Playground in Waterbeach, as well as going back to Saxon and Viking times for a special History Day, which saw them learn about the traditions and customs of the era before taking part in ‘battle’ on Leighton Lawn.

Year 5 were given a taste of life at the Upper with an Academic Day which included picking up map reading skills and an orienteering challenge in geography, excavated ancient artefacts in classics and took part in a coding challenge with Microbits in computer science.

They also took to the stage with the Centre Stage production of Then, Now, Next, written by Prep Assistant Head Tobias Bown, with music and lyrics by Director of Music Paul Harris and Director of Enrichment Jules Reston respectively.

The wonderful show was based around a group of actors who tell a story about a diamond being stolen from a museum. However, some time travellers help the heroes by going back in time to before the diamond was stolen and they manage to avert the theft, with the criminals seeing the error of their ways.

Year 6 pupils had the chance to get behind the wheel of the Upper Engineering Club’s electric racing car, built to take part in the Greenpower race series, as the lower playground became a mini Silverstone. They also discovered how the students went about constructing the vehicle and designed logos for the team.

Throughout the week, it was all systems go for each year group as they designed their own rockets before blasting off from the Leighton Lawn launchpad.

Meanwhile, children were inspired by talks and workshops from experts across a range of fields from television news presenting and architecture to climate change and particle physics.

With the Paris Olympics just around the corner, the Prep’s annual Sports Day provided a fitting and fun finale to Inspiration Week.
