Perse hockey team claim East title

The Perse boys’ U12 hockey team have been crowned East champions after an exceptional display in the regional finals at Ipswich School.

Having already won the county title, the side got off to a blistering start with a 5-0 win over Stamford with a hat-trick from Beau Martinez-McCune and further goals by Samit Salaunkey and Henry Bowler.

They continued with a 3-0 victory over Ipswich with Beau Martinez-McCune (2) and Henry Bowler on target, and a 2-0 triumph against Bishop’s Stortford College with both goals from Toby Rayner.

Back-to-back 4-0 successes followed against Felsted (Samit Salaunkey 2, Henry Bowler, Hugo Lindemann) and Norwich School (Hugo Lindemann 2, Henry Bowler, Beau Martinez-McCune) respectively.

The boys then beat Bedford School 2-0 with goals from Beau Martinez-McCune and Hugo Lindemann in their final group match to top their pool.

This set up a semi-final with New Hall School with The Perse running out 4-1 victors thanks to two goals from Hugo Lindemann and one apiece by Henry Bowler and Beau Martinez-McCune.

Toby Rayner netted the decisive goal in the final as the team beat St Faith’s School 1-0 to take the regional honours.

Team coach Nicky Bareham said: “I am very proud of how hard the boys have worked in recent weeks and the progress they have made as a team this term.

“On the day the boys performed to the highest level, playing some superb hockey and leaving nothing out on the pitch.

“They are a very talented group of players who I hope have a bright hockey future in front of them.”
