Top international tournament awaits Perse tennis ace

Harry Voss (Year 9) hopes to be a big hitter at a major international junior tennis tournament in Spain next week.

He will be playing in both the boys’ U16 and U15 singles events in the illustrious TEN-PRO Global Junior Tour event at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Majorca, starting on Monday.

Having taken up tennis aged four, Harry has progressed to playing for Cambridgeshire at age group levels as well as taking part in national competitions.

Although Harry is also no stranger to playing overseas events, he is relishing the opportunity to compete in the TEN-PRO competition, which will feature 32 of the top young tennis aces from around the world.

He qualified based on recent performances, which have boosted his place in the Universal Tennis Ratings system.

Harry, who trains for around 13 hours each week at Hills Road Tennis Centre and David Lloyd Cambridge, said: “I’ve been doing quite well lately and it’s great to have been able to get into this tournament.

“It’s the biggest tournament I’ll have ever played in, so I’m really looking forward to it and hopefully I can do well.

“I think it’s played on a mix of clay and hard courts. Hard courts are my favourite and clay courts are my least favourite as I’m an attacking player, and clay is a slower surface so it’s harder to play my kind of game.”

Despite the competition being held at the Rafa Nadal Academy, Harry admitted his favourite player was the recently retired Roger Federer as “it’s just the way he made everything look effortless”.

Harry hopes to follow in Federer’s footsteps by becoming a professional player as well as having ambitions of earning a tennis scholarship at a top US university.
