New Perse girls’ rugby team set to kick off at major tournament

The first-ever Perse girls’ rugby team are all set to tackle their inaugural tournament when they take part in the Rosslyn Park National Schools Sevens tomorrow. (Tuesday 19 March).

The side is formed of players from Year 9 and they will face opposition from Cardinal Newman Catholic School, Hill House and Ysgol Calon Cymru in the group stage of the U14 Cup at the prestigious competition in London.

Perse coach Charlie Baker began working with a small group of girls who had expressed an interest in learning how to play contact rugby around a year ago.

From there, the squad has expanded to around 20 girls regularly giving up their time during lunch activities break or after school to practise the sport.

Mr Baker said: “Their dedication and enthusiasm have become infectious amongst the year group. The girls have fully embraced the contact aspect of the game in training and it will be exciting to see how they apply themselves in their first-ever competitive game.

“The Rosslyn Park Sevens is the world’s largest school rugby tournament, and the girls will have three pool matches to look forward to, with the winner of the pool progressing to the knockout rounds.

“It is great to see female students within the Perse community work hard to create new opportunities for themselves and others within the school.”

Squad: Blythe Buchanan, Daisy Fox, Elise Heck, Kherlen Ho, Shiyue Li, Yilu Liu, Georgia O’Sullivan, Lottie Denny-Gouldson, Lizzie Edgar, Emily Rumsby, Imogen Walker, Athene Ross, Lina Opel, Elena Podesta, Audrey Sennitt, Alice Colgan.
