Two prestigious titles for Perse tennis player

Jonny Cross (Year 10) had an ace time at the LTA Junior Welsh Open tennis tournament with victory in two events.

He won the boys’ U16 singles and doubles titles against a strong field at the high-profile competition in Wrexham.

“I wasn’t seeded in either event and there were some very good players in there, so I went into it with no expectations, so I was really happy to win both events,” said Jonny, who also went on reach the semi-finals in both the boys’ U18 singles and doubles.

The U16 singles saw Jonny impressively take the honours without conceding a set.

He said: “My first match was quite comfortable, but my second was against the No 1 seed so I knew that would be tough. Although I won in straight sets, it was quite close.

“My semi-final was probably the hardest one. I won in straight sets, but it was a really long match with a first set tie-break.

“The final I won 6-4, 6-4 and I just played really well, but I was really pleased not to drop a set throughout the competition, even though it was quite tight during the quarter and semi-finals.”

In the U16 doubles, Jonny teamed up with Harry Senior (pupil from another school) and they quickly clicked despite never having played together before.

He said: “In the doubles, you got to decide who you played with and Harry, who is a really good player, asked me to join him.

“We were unseeded, but we were quite confident going into it and all the matches were quite straightforward apart from the final. That went to a third-set tie-break, which we won 10-7, but it was a very close match.”
