Competition success sums up Perse mathematicians
Numerical knowledge added up to success for Perse students in national maths competitions during the Michaelmas term.
Thirty students took part in Round 1 of the British Maths Olympiad (BMO), having been among the top 2,000 performers in the Senior Maths Challenge – a competition involving more than 100,000 pupils from across the country.
Ryan Stubbs (Year 9), Arthur Depledge, Tom Hammond, Neelkantha Mukherjee (all Year 11), John Lau, Mabel Symes (both Lower Sixth), Jem Bennett, Daniel Chen, Kiran Diamond, Andrew Girgis, Emma Harris, Hongli Hu and Elvira Munteanu (all Upper Sixth) achieved Distinctions having finished in the top 25% of entrants, while a further eight Perse students gained Merits.
John Lau and Daniel Chen finished in the top 100 to book their place in Round 2 of BMO, while Daniel also won a Medal for his performance.
The Senior Maths Challenge saw 202 Perse pupils take part, with 113 claiming Gold, while 51 students went on to participate in the Senior Kangaroo, with 14 gaining a Merit.
Meanwhile, 35 Perse students got involved in the Maths Olympiad for Girls, a UK Mathematics Trust initiative that aims to raise participation in STEM activities.
Distinctions were awarded to Zoe Walters (Year 10), Ellen Halsall, Rena Li, Yijin Liu (all Year 11), Ellice Chen, Bibi Elliott, Kelda Lee, Rebecca Li, Shirley Meng, Natalie Ronco, Mabel Symes, Alina Turchyn, Katya Verzhbitskaya, Yolanda Xue (all Lower Sixth), Imogen Beaton, Yunlin Chen, Emma Harris, Elvira Munteanu and Imogen Warren (all Upper Sixth), with Bibi Elliott impressively also scoring full marks.
