Perse pupil proves a big hitter in European golf competition

Harry Howell (Year 9) got in the swing of things by finishing joint-second at the US Kids Golf European Championships in Scotland.
The competition attracted top young players from the across Europe to Glen Golf Club, North Berwick, with Harry taking part in the boys’ 14-year-old age category.
Wind and rain from the first tee to the 18th green met golfers in a challenging first round, but after a tough start, lying 4 over after five holes, Harry fought back with no dropped shots and three birdies to finish the day 1 over par in a tie for second place.
Harry’s short game came to the fore in the second round as he finished -1 for the day to see him at level par for the tournament and leading by one shot with a whole host of good players behind him.
In glorious conditions, Harry extended his lead to three shots after hitting three birdies in the first six holes in the final round.
A Danish opponent went ahead on the 11th tee following a string of birdies, but some clutch putting and superb bunker play saw Harry regain his lead going into the final hole.
However, a rotten lie in a fairway bunker put paid to Harry’s title chances as he finished in a tie for runners-up spot, with a 1 over par score of 217 across 54 holes, in what was a very promising start to his season.
