The Perse girls’ U15 and U13 cricket teams did the county double after being crowned Cambridgeshire indoor champions in their respective age groups.

With both county tournaments played at Cambridge University Sports Centre, each Perse team won all of their matches to qualify for the Lady Taverners indoor regional finals, which will take place at the same venue on 27 April (U13) and 4 May (U15).

The U13 team, which was made up solely of Year 7 cricketers in a Year 8 competition, got off to a great start with victory over Impington Village College.

Batting first, The Perse scored 124 for 1 before restricting Impington to 22 for 6, with Amber Smith and Blythe Buchanan taking 2 for 2 and 2 for 3 off their respective overs. Lottie Denny-Gouldson claimed a wicket maiden and Athene Ross took 1 for 6, while catches were taken by Blythe, Olivia Kaser and Athene.

The girls kept in the runs against North Cambridge Academy as they posted 114 for 0, including five sixes, before NCA replied with 28 for 1 with Amber making the catch.

It set up a winner-takes-all clash with St Faith’s School, who scored 69 for 4 batting first. Olivia took two wickets, the first thanks to a catch from Athene, while both she and Lottie both forced run-outs.

Co-captains Athene and Olivia provided a great platform in the Perse reply as they both quickly hit 15 runs before retiring under the rules of the competition. St Faith’s took two wickets to stay in the game, but the Perse team, which also featured Daisy Fox, Audrey Sennitt, Katie Ronco and Emily Rumsby, chased down the total in the seventh over to clinch the county title.

In the U15 tournament, The Perse got under way with victory over Comberton Village College. After scoring 81 for 4, they bowled out Comberton for 42.

Lulu Harding took a wicket from the first ball of Comberton’s innings after an excellent catch by Rosabel Clarke. The same pair combined again to take another wicket, while Lulu proceeded to get three run-outs thanks to some quick-thinking wicketkeeping. Meanwhile, Charlotte Deacon took two wickets and Isabelle Whichello one from their overs.

The Perse blasted six sixes as they set a target of 115 against St Bede’s Inter-Church School and restricted their opponents to 34 for 7. Charlotte took three wickets and made a direct hit runout, while Lulu took two bowled wickets, a runout and a catch and Rosabel claimed two catches.

As with the U13 team, it all came down to the final game to decide the champions with The Leys providing the opposition this time.

Lulu did a brilliant job with the bat as she reached retirement in the space of three balls with two sixes and a four. She was called upon again after the girls lost seven wickets for just 11 runs, blasting six sixes and a four in helping the team make 71 all out.

The girls went on to produce a tight display of bowling and fielding. Magnificent catches by Ella Davidson and Lucy Smith from deliveries by Lulu set the tone.

Further wickets fell to Charlotte and Isabelle as The Leys were halted on 42, ensuring the team, which also included Anya Stafford, Aimee Reed and Kitty Wansell, took the honours.
