National finals await Perse hockey team after East triumph

The Perse boys’ U14 hockey team are through to the England Hockey national schools championships finals after being crowned East champions.

In the round-robin regional finals at Wilberforce Road, the team opened with a goalless draw against The Leys after being thwarted by an excellent display from the opposition goalkeeper.

With The Leys going on to beat Gresham’s 1-0, the boys knew they needed to win their match against the latter by two goals to take the title.

They did just that thanks to a 3-0 victory over Gresham’s, with goals from Niall Graham, Luke Hamilton and Thomas Goldsmith, to book their spot in the national finals at Lee Valley Hockey & Tennis Centre on 26 April.

Disregarding the 2021 competition, which was cancelled due to the Covid pandemic, it is the fourth year in a row that Perse boys’ U14 teams have won the East crown and reached the national finals.
