Coach ‘incredibly proud’ of Perse hockey team’s display in national cup final

The Perse girls’ 1st XI hockey team narrowly missed out in their bid for victory in the England Hockey Schools Championships National U18 Plate final.
They lost 2-1 to Eastbourne College in the final at Lee Valley Hockey & Tennis Centre – the venue for the 2012 Olympics hockey tournament – despite putting in a strong and energetic performance throughout the match.
Following a goalless first half, Eastbourne went 2-0 up after the interval, but Perse captain Alex Pitchford went close to reducing the deficit when she hit the post.
The team eventually pulled a goal back four minutes from the end when a penalty corner was deflected in by Madalena Sennitt.

With time running out, goalkeeper Jessie Zhang was replaced by an extra outfield player in an attempt to put Eastbourne under pressure, but the girls were unable to grab an equaliser.
Perse Head of Hockey Ross Hayward said: “I’m incredibly proud of the player group and what they have achieved over the course of a long hockey season. They have committed a huge amount of time into training and playing this season.
“The cup run has been exciting and a great experience. For our Upper Sixth pupils playing their final school match at the Lee Valley Hockey Centre in the Olympic Park, it was a great way to end their Perse hockey involvement.”
