Promising Perse sailor makes waves at Roy Burrell Awards

Skilled young sailor Joey Taylor (Year 11) has won the Outstanding Performer honour at the 2021 Roy Burrell Awards.
Organised by Cambridge & District Secondary Schools Sports Association, the annual awards mark the successes of the most accomplished young sportspeople in the Cambridge area.
It is the second year in a row that a Perse pupil has claimed the top accolade, with talented swimmer Sebastian Vandermeer taking the award in 2020.
At 15, Joey became one of the youngest members of the Royal Yachting Association’s Youth Performance Squad last November following his performances in events and training camps in the 420 class with crewmate Kuba Staite, who is based at Hayling Island.
On winning the Roy Burrell Award, he said: “I feel chuffed to have been chosen as the outstanding performer. It came as a big surprise as there is a strong field of athletes in Cambridgeshire.
“Having won the award for sailing, I hope it encourages more people to get involved with the sport in Cambridgeshire.”
As the GB youth sailing squad has elite athlete status, Joey has been fortunate to be able to continue training throughout the latest lockdown and he has a big year of racing ahead.
He said: “There is an extremely packed schedule of sailing events and training coming up and leading into the summer. We have the spring selection series starting this weekend, from which the GB squad will be chosen for the World and European Championships, followed by the rescheduled National Youth Championships in mid-August.
“I’m really excited to get going with some racing and can’t wait to bring on new challenges.”
