Perse general knowledge team are Junior Schools’ Challenge champions

The Perse has retained the national Junior Schools’ Challenge title thanks to a consummate quiz team of Year 8 pupils.
This year’s competition went online due to the coronavirus pandemic, but the team, captained by Dhruv Radhakrishnan and featuring James Rix, Darien Taylor and Tom Hammond, with support from substitute Marcus Wentzell, adapted successfully to the new format.
They beat King’s Rochester 840-310 and Hereford Cathedral School 740-190 in the quarter and semi-finals respectively before being crowned champions after a 700-440 triumph over Dragon School, Oxford in the final.
It follows on from the Perse team of Vikram Singh, Oliver Phillips (both Upper Sixth), Malachy Wallace and Sean Ridley (both Year 10) winning the online Senior Schools’ Challenge plate competition in May.
Despite being knocked out in the quarter-finals of the main competition, they bounced back to defeat King Edward VI Grammar School 820-470 in the semis of the plate event before taking the honours with an 840-390 victory against Calday Grange Grammar School in the final.
