Ed Gaskarth and Will Buchanan enjoyed a successful time at the National Junior Indoor Rowing Championships.
The Lower Sixth students won gold and bronze respectively in the Year 12 boys’ category in the competition at the Copper Box Arena in London’s Olympic Park.
In a field of more than 50 participants, Ed completed 2,000 metres on the rowing machine in a personal best time of 6min 22.4sec to take victory, while Will made it on to the podium in third after clocking 6min 30.1sec.
Ed, who rows for the Cambridge ’99 club, said: “It was enjoyable to do and a pleasant surprise to finish as high as I did. I was hoping to get a PB, but I exceeded my expectations.”
Will, a member of the GB World Class Start programme, commented: “Having gone last year, I was expecting to finish in a similar position, but it was quite a different field. It was a lot of fun to take part in and I feel quite pleased with how I did.”
Both Ed and Will regularly use the indoor machines as part of their general rowing training “especially during the winter when it’s dark and cold and the weather conditions make it difficult to go out on the water outside of school time.”
Their attention now turns to a busy season featuring the Schools’ Head of the River event on the Boat Race course later this month and the national schools championships in May.
