Perse Prep welcomes top author and illustrator for World Book Day
6 Mar 2020
Top children’s author and illustrator Tom McLaughlin enthralled Perse Prep pupils during his visit to mark World Book Day.
Tom is well known for his Accidental series of novels as well as having written books such as The Day I Became the Most Wanted Boy in the World and Happyville High You’ve Been Werewolfed.
He gave an entertaining and informative talk to an audience full of children who got into the spirit of the occasion by dressing up as their favourite book characters ranging from the Dementors from Harry Potter to the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland.
Tom spoke about how he became a writer and illustrator, having been dyslexic as a child. He explained how he worked as a newspaper cartoonist before “plucking up the courage to write”. Besides outlining the inspirations for his story ideas, Tom also demonstrated how he comes up with illustrations, using a tablet to show how he creates some of his drawings, and offered tips to budding illustrators on how to make their sketches more eye-catching and effective.
Year 5 children also took part in workshops with Tom where they were able to ask more questions about being an author and illustrator before listening to him read short extracts from his books.
Tom said he enjoyed visiting the Prep and was pleased with the response from the children.
He said: “I spend a lot of time in front of the computer either writing or drawing so to actually be among kids, who the books are for, is great.
“Getting out and going to schools is really good. It’s a way of keeping me grounded and refreshing my kind of ideas to make sure I’m still relevant to what kids are into and what they want to be.”
