Record number of rowers represent Perse at national indoor championships
16 Dec 2019
The Perse sent their biggest ever squad to the Mizuno British Rowing Indoor Championships at Lee Valley Velodrome.
Twenty-six athletes represented the school, ranging from Year 7 to the Sixth Form, with 10 recording personal bests along the way.
Brett Taylor, who represented Chinese Taipei at the World Rowing Junior Championships in August, was among them as he completed 2,000 metres on the rowing machine in 6min 12.4sec to take bronze in the Sixth Form boys’ category, three seconds behind the winner. Despite being a last-minute addition to the Perse contingent, Ed Gaskarth also claimed a PB in the same class as he finished ninth in 6.27.1.
Elsewhere in the Sixth Form event, Will Buchanan (6.29.7) and Cameron Mackenzie (6.40.6) were 12th and 20th respectively.
Another notable performances came from Harry Purvis, who was third in his heat and 12th overall in the Year 9 boys’ section, while Jacob Ross and Djia Sanath-Vijay were 14th and 17th respectively in the Year 7 boys’ event.
Perse rowing coach Ed Miller said: “It’s the largest group we have taken down to the event and several of our competitors have only been doing indoor rowing for a term. It was really good to get so many to compete at the event alongside Olympic medallists and to experience competitive indoor rowing.”
