4 Dec 2019
The Perse junior boys’ tennis team earned their best finish in the top tier of the LTA Schools Team Tennis Championships by finishing runners-up in the regional finals at Welwyn Garden City.
Taking part in Division One of the Years 7 & 8 boys’ section of the competition, the team, featuring Jonny Cross, Ganesh Mullaparthi, Zander Brock, Raphael Tan, Sarvesh Singh, Jeremy Shao and Krzysztof Minczuk, won the Cambridgeshire League during the Summer term 2019, to qualify for the knockout stages this term.
They carried on their form to beat Langley School and Felsted to reach the South East regional finals at Gosling Tennis Centre.
Jonny Cross, Ganesh Mullaparthi, Zander Brock and Raphael Tan represented The Perse on finals day as they showed great fight and determination to clinch a convincing 5-1 victory in their semi-final against Sevenoaks School.
In the final, they met Reed’s School, which has produced stars such as Tim Henman and Jamie Delgado and won three World Schools Tennis Championships. The boys competed well and enjoyed some very close sets, but Reed’s proved too strong and ran out 6-0 victors.
Perse Director of Sport Glenn Kirkham said: “This is the furthest a Perse tennis team has reached in this tier of the schools competition structure and we are incredibly proud of their achievements.”
