Perse hockey team reach national indoor finals

The Perse girls’ U16 indoor hockey team are through to the England Hockey Schools Super 6s finals after finishing runners-up in the East qualifiers.
They got off to a positive start in the round-robin tournament at Queenswood School, Hatfield, with a 2-1 victory over New Hall School. Holly Smith opened the scoring, only for their opponents to level, before captain Alex Pitchford grabbed the winner.
A 1-1 draw followed against Norwich School, with Holly Smith on target after an excellent run down the right by Freya Stafford.
The Perse looked to be in charge as they took a 2-0 lead in their next match against Sevenoaks School with goals from Charlotte Rye and Bella Ely. However, Sevenoaks pegged them back to equalise before Bella Ely fired home late on to seal a 3-2 triumph.
Holly Smith hit a hat-trick, with Bella Ely also on the score sheet, as the team beat Haileybury 4-3. However, it needed a superb diving save from goalkeeper Bibi Elliott in the closing stages to ensure the win, which was enough to secure a top-two finish in the table and a place in the national finals at Bromsgrove School in January.
With both teams having already qualified, the final game saw the girls take on Framlingham College to decide who would clinch the regional title. Strikes from Charlotte Rye and Bella Izzard gave The Perse the perfect start, but Framlingham responded by coming back to win 3-2.
Team coach Nicky Bareham said: “Qualifying for the national finals is a superb achievement and the girls should be immensely proud of the hard work that has gone into reaching this stage of the competition.”
