The Perse U16 girls’ hockey team clinched the Cambridgeshire indoor schools title in dominant style.
In the round-robin tournament, held at The Perse, they set the tone with an 8-0 victory over Joyce Frankland Academy Newport. Notably, the first five goals were scored by Year 9 girls who have a further two years ahead of them at this age group.
The team followed it up by prevailing 5-0 against Saffron Walden County High School before rounding off with a 6-0 win over the Stephen Perse Foundation, in which Bella Izzard grabbed a hat-trick, to take the county spoils.
Captained by Alex Pitchford, the goals were spread around seven different members of the squad, with May Busher being top scorer. They will now represent Cambridgeshire in the East finals on 30 November.
However, the U18 girls’ team missed out on the county title by the narrowest of margins after losing in the final on penalty strokes despite not conceding a goal in open play throughout the tournament.
They topped their group, following a goalless draw with Hills Road Sixth Form College and a 1-0 triumph over Kimbolton School with the vital goal coming from Katie Russell.
The team faced The Leys in the final, but neither side could break the deadlock, so the winner had to be decided on a shootout. Unfortunately, the final Perse shot hit the post and The Leys took the title.
Coach Richard Morgan said: “The umpires commented that it was a game that would have been worthy of any regional final, which is testament to the quality on show.”
