Perse golfer qualifies for Junior World Championships

Will McKernan (Year 9) is celebrating after earning a spot at the IMG Academy Junior World Golf Championships in San Diego.
Representing Saffron Walden Golf Club, the Perse pupil has made it through to the prestigious tournament, which takes place in July, after finishing runner-up in the boys’ 13-14 years old category with a net score of 75 in a tough qualifying competition at Maylands Golf Club in Essex.
He said: “It was my first time playing at this course and the conditions were really cold and windy, it was only three or four degrees, so I just tried to hit the ball a lot lower. I was quite pleased with my result in the end because there weren’t many good scores because of the conditions.
“I was a bit nervous when I was looking at the score sheets, but I was really happy that I got through in the end and hopefully it will pay off.”
Will, who plays off a handicap on nine, cannot wait to test himself against the world’s best young golfers in California this summer.
He said: “I’m really excited. The competition has had previous winners such as Tiger Woods and Ernie Els and I’ve never played in a tournament as big as this before. It’s going to be a great experience and I’m looking forward to taking it all in when I get there.
“There will be over 1,000 golfers there from 67 different countries, so this is a great opportunity. It will be really tough. The field is really strong out there, but if I can hit the three best rounds I possibly can, I’ll be happy no matter what the outcome. I just want to hopefully score inside the top 75 for my age group.”
The junior world championships are not the only major occasion coming up for Will, who began playing golf aged seven, as he also has the European Junior Open qualifiers to look forward to in August.
