Double Lord’s chance for Perse cricket teams after further regional success
2 May 2019
The Perse U15 girls’ indoor cricket team has followed in the footsteps of the U13 side by qualifying for the national finals of the Lady Taverners tournament at Lord’s.
The U13 side won their regional final at the University of Cambridge Sports Centre last week to ensure their spot in the national finals, which will be held at the MCC Academy, and the U15 team made it a double success for The Perse by clinching the regional crown and qualification at the same venue.
The U15 team began by racking up 106 for 5 in their opening game, while restricting Banovallum School to 33 in response. They followed it up by beating Bedford Modern School, scoring 120 for 5 and halting their opponents at 74 for 6.
Again The Perse batted first in their last pool match and chalked up 105 for 8 before holding Wellingborough School to 98 for 5 in a close-fought game, in which Saira Powar bagged three wickets, as they topped the group and moved into the final against Norwich School.
The team responded well after an early loss of wickets to make 88 runs from their eight overs before a superb bowling and fielding display saw Norwich dismissed for 59 with Saira Powar claiming another three-wicket haul, Alexandra Pitchford and Bella Howarth taking two apiece and Izzy Bevens one.
The Perse U13 and U15 girls’ teams will now test themselves in the Lady Taverners finals at Lord’s on 21 and 22 May respectively.
