Top poet entertains Perse Prep pupils during National Poetry Day visit

Leading poet Paul Cookson had pupils in fits of giggles when he visited The Perse Prep to mark National Poetry Day.
Paul has written or compiled around 60 anthologies of poetry, aimed at a range of audiences, and also has the honour of being the official poet in residence at the National Football Museum in Manchester.
He kept Prep children entertained with a performance of his energetic and hilarious works, raising plenty of laughs and making sure they played a big part in the fun with lots of audience participation – even making teachers get involved in doing the actions for some of his poems!
On a more serious note, Paul read aloud his favourite poem Let No-One Steal Your Dreams – an inspirational verse explaining to the children why they should follow their ambitions.
He then provided tips and advice to Year 6 pupils through a series of workshops, explaining how he goes about writing poems before putting together a verse with the children.
Paul said: “I really enjoyed coming to The Perse Prep. It was great to see the children and the staff joining in. It’s great involving them and making that connection. It’s not just you saying ‘I’m a poet. I’m going to red some poems’, it’s more about ‘we’re going to read some poems together.’”
Listen to Paul explain why he enjoys performing poetry and why he feels children respond so well to it.
