The Perse School girls’ hockey teams have been crowned county champions at U14 and U12 level.
The U14 team claimed the Cambridgeshire schools title following a series of confident displays throughout the round-robin competition.
They began with an 8-0 victory over Joyce Frankland Academy Newport and followed it up by defeating Stephen Perse Foundation 3-0 and Kimbolton School 8-0. The Perse were held to a 1-1 draw by The Leys in their last match, but they came out on top overall with 10 points.
Saskia Stock, Sophie Allen and May Busher each scored five goals during the tournament. Bella Ely and Joely Harrison netted two piece, while Holly Smith was also on target. The team now progresses to the East round of the Investec England Hockey Schools Championships in Bedford next month.
In the U12 tournament, nails were bitten as The Perse needed penalty flicks to clinch their county success.
Following a goalless draw in the final with St Faith’s School, a shootout was required to decide the champions. With the sides level at 2-2, goalkeeper Jean MacDonald made a superb save to her left before Millie Ely stepped up to fire home the winning strike.
The team had earlier topped their group after beating King’s Ely 1-0, with a goal from Lucy Smith, and Saffron Walden County High School 2-0 thanks to Millie Ely and Esme Jonas.
They followed it up by beating Stephen Perse Foundation 1-0 in the semi-final, with Millie Ely on target in a tight game, before edging past St Faith’s to book their place in the regional round of the England Hockey In2Hockey Championships in Ipswich next month.
