Medal success for Perse orienteers at British Championships
18 Oct 2018
All three Perse School teams made it on to the podium at the British Schools Score Orienteering Championships in the New Forest.
Matthew Clarke (Upper Sixth) retained his national title in the individual Year 12 to 13 boys’ class as he skilfully navigated his way around a series of ‘controls’. Ten points were earned for each checkpoint visited within a 45-minute time limit around a course of the competitors’ choice at Moors Valley Country Park.
Every minute arriving late to the finish warranted a five-point deduction and while Matthew’s time of 46 min 34sec meant he was penalised 10 points, he had still done enough to take gold with 260 points.
Matthew also helped The Perse team, featuring David Palmer (Upper Sixth), Rupert Gardiner, Sam Hague (both Lower Sixth), Daniel Hague (Year 10) and Ben Clarke (Year 9), clinch third place in the boys’ Years 10-13 team category.
Meanwhile, the Prep Year 5 and 6 boys’ team of Ruairi and Sam (both Year 6), Roy (Year 5) and Alex (Year 4) and the Prep Year 5 and 6 girls’ team of Hebe (Year 6) and Emily (Year 5) were both runners-up in their respective classes.
