Sebastian Vandermeer (Year 9) is celebrating success in the pool after winning the 50m freestyle crown at the Swim England National Summer Meet at Sheffield’s Ponds Forge.
Having met the qualifying standard for the event with his victory at the East Region Swimming Championships in May, Sebastian shone over the sprint distance in the 15 year old boys’ category at the English finals. He set the quickest time in the heats with a swim of 25.01 and narrowly beat Jacob Armon (Seals RSA) by just 0.01sec in the final to take gold with a personal best of 24.84 – almost a second faster than his qualifying time for the competition.
Sebastian also performed well with his club, City of Cambridge, in the relays at the British Summer Swimming Championships, also held at Ponds Forge.
After being the fastest team during the preliminary round of the 14-16 year old boys’ 4x100m freestyle relay with a time of 3.36.21, Cambridge secured bronze in the final in 3.36.00 with Sebastian racing the opening leg. Sebastian, whose successful season began with a gold and two bronzes at the Thai National Age Group Championships in April, also helped Cambridge to fifth place in the 14-16 year old boys’ 4x200m freestyle relay final in 7.57.41.
