The Perse U15 boys’ cricket team have clinched the Cambridgeshire Schools T20 Cup following a 33-run victory over The Leys in the final.
Batting first, The Perse got off to a flying start with a quickfire 19 from Seb Millbank.
Fresh from hitting a century in the county semi-finals against King’s Ely, Nikhil Gorantla then joined Henry Howarth, who had made a superb unbeaten 76 for the Perse 1st XI in Monday’s win over the MCC.
The in-form batting pair attacked The Leys bowling, chalking up 145 runs together at a rate of 10 per over, displaying an impressive range of stroke play. By the time Henry Howarth fell near the end of the innings for 73 (from 62 balls), they had taken The Perse to 201 for 2, with Nikhil Gorantla unbeaten on 75 from just 51 balls.
Nikhil Gorantla proved as adept with the ball with back-to-back maiden overs helping to ensure The Leys only scored 20 runs from their six-over powerplay.
Solid catching and fielding from The Perse meant despite some late hitting, The Leys were always behind the required run rate.
Coach Chris Ingram was delighted with the team’s performance, and felt the contributions of Henry Howarth and Nikhil Gorantla were especially merited.
He said: “In my coaching opinion, it was the best U15 partnership I have ever seen. I was particularly impressed with not just the power but the intelligent shot selection of their hitting.
“The runs were all scored from genuine cricket strokes and on a pitch with long boundaries.”
Following on from their county success, The Perse will now face Middlesex champions Merchant Taylors’ School in the next round of the ESCA T20 Cup on Monday.
