Isaac Pfaender (Year 10) has clinched a silver medal at the Sportshall UK indoor athletics national finals.

The Perse pupil was representing the East in the national championships at Sportcity in Manchester after winning the overall title for his performances over three events – shot put, standing long jump and two-lap sprint – at the regional finals in Norwich last month.

Isaac had claimed a personal best of 14.27m in topping the shot put standings at the regional qualifiers. He added a further centimetre at the UK finals for a new personal best of 14.28m, which was enough to secure second place and silver in the shot put.

Isaac came fifth in the standing long jump with a leap of 2m 69cm and 12th in the two-lap time trial in a time of 20.2sec – improving on his respective distance and time from the previous round – to finish fourth in the overall competition with 266 points out of a possible 300.

He said: “I feel as if the competition was not my best, but I’m still satisfied with my overall performance. I’m happy with my progress and grateful that I could compete. It was an honour to carry the East region banner.”
