Perse hockey team takes bronze at England Schools finals

The Perse boys’ U14 team produced a terrific performance to clinch bronze at the Notts Sport England Hockey Schools Championships national finals.
They graced the same venue used for the London 2012 Olympic tournament – Lee Valley Hockey & Tennis Centre – after earning their place in the finals via a play-off last month.
The team got off to a great start with a 2-1 win over Bromsgrove School. After going behind early on, two goals in the space of a minute during the second half from captain Charlie Underwood and Olly Traherne sealed victory for The Perse.
Vice-captain Robert Gwilt gave the boys an early edge in their second group game against Sherborne School. Sherborne levelled late in the second half, but with just a minute to go, Charlie Underwood fired home to snatch another 2-1 triumph.
A 2-0 defeat in their last pool match against St George’s College meant the team missed out on the final, but they came third in the country after finishing runners-up in their group and received medals for their efforts.
Coach Ravi Mahendra was proud of the way the Perse players had conducted themselves throughout the tournament.
He said: “The boys did really well, not just today but through the course of the whole season. They’ve put in a fantastic amount of time and effort to get to the finals and they can certainly hold their heads up high.
“The boys are positive about the future. They’re only 13 or 14 years old so they’ve got a long hockey career ahead of them at The Perse and hopefully there can be some more successes along the way.”
