National finals beckon for Perse hockey team after claiming East glory

A stunning performance from The Perse U13 boys’ hockey team saw them win the East title and qualify for the national finals of the England Hockey Schools In2Hockey Championships.
The team scored 23 goals and conceded just one on their way to triumph in the East finals. They will now join The Perse U13 girls’ team, who won their regional tournament in November, in the finals at Nottingham Hockey Centre on 11 May.
The boys set the ball rolling with a 3-0 win over Ipswich School with Jack Moffat scoring twice and captain Toby London also netting. They followed it up with 1-0 victories against both Langley School and Spalding Grammar School, with Alex Cross and Noah Bateman notching the decisive goals in the respective matches.
The Perse then racked up back-to-back 7-0 successes against Robert Bloomfield Academy (goals from Toby London 2, Yujian Zou 2, Alex Cross, Jack Moffat and Dominic Collinson) and Holmewood (Yujian Zou 2, Jack Moffat 2, Dominic Collinson 2 and Alex Cross). They were held to a goalless draw by Merchant Taylors’ School in their final group game, but qualified for the semi-finals as pool winners.
Toby London and Jack Moffat were on target as the team beat Brandeston Hall 2-1 in the semi-finals and they went on to seal the title by defeating Felsted School 2-0 in the final, with Jack Moffat and Alex Cross scoring the goals.
Team coach Redvers Wilbur said: “It is worth highlighting that they owe their success to the way they played together, attacking and defending as a team.
“It is difficult to pick out individuals because they all deserve a mention, but it would be remiss not to mention Toby London, who captained the side magnificently throughout, and Ben Carey, who marshalled an extraordinarily tight defence all day.
“The boys were delighted to have retained the title and are really looking forward to playing at the national finals in May.”
