County triumph for Perse hockey team

22 Feb 2018

The Perse boys’ U13 hockey team have clinched the Cambridgeshire title after winning all their matches at the county tournament.

The team got off to an emphatic start with a 10-0 victory over Joyce Frankland Academy Newport thanks to two goals apiece from Dominic Collinson, Jack Moffat and Toby London and one each from Austin Wang, Yujian Zou, Alex Cross and Newby Lilley.

They topped their pool after beating St John’s School 4-0, with Austin Wang scoring twice and Toby London and Yujian Zou also both on target.

In the semi-finals, Austin Wang hit a hat-trick as The Perse claimed a 3-1 win against St Faith’s School.

The boys met St John’s once more in the final and ran out 6-0 victors this time around to be crowned county champions. Dominic Collinson and Yujian Zou both netted two goals and Toby London and Jack Moffat each scored once.

Team coach Redvers Wilbur said: “The boys were brilliant all afternoon, scoring lots of superb goals and playing really well together as a team.

“Perhaps most impressive was the way they worked hard for each other and showed great character when it mattered, notably coming back from being 1-0 down to St Faith’s at half time in the semi-final. Overall, I’m very proud of the way they played.”

The Perse team will now take part in the East finals of the England Schools In2Hockey Championships at Bedford on 13 March.
