Tom Blake achieved the best ever individual placing by a Perse runner in an English Schools Cross Country Cup national final when he finished 10th in the intermediate boys’ race.
He stayed in touch with the lead group throughout the U15 race at Sevenoaks School and completed the 4.3km course, which featured a series of hills, in a time of 14min 15sec.
Ethan Seal finished 31st, while the Perse team, which also featured George McLaren, Ed Gaskarth, Zach Taylor and Charlie Knott, came 15th overall.
The Perse were also represented in the junior girls’ final for the first time and the team of Rebecca West, Charlotte Hamblin, Beatrice Rogers, May Busher, Isabella Harvey and Grace Bennett, performed well to finish 17th overall. Beatrice Rogers was the leading Perse runner in 49th.
Meanwhile, The Perse had a successful time at the Cambridge District Schools Championships with the three girls’ teams winning their categories (U12, U14 and U16) and the boys’ U16 team were victorious in their section.
Their triumphs helped ensure The Perse were the overall winners for the fourth year in a row.
Among the standout individual performances were runners-up placings for Nic Harlahakis (U16 boys), Ava London (U14 girls), Hugh Ponder (U12 boys) and May Busher (U12 girls).
Rebecca West was third in the U14 girls’ race, while Lotti Knights and Jake Borrett were fifth in the U16 girls’ and U14 boys’ events respectively.
A record number of 22 Perse pupils have now been invited to take part in the county trials in Ely on 14 January.
