Brett Taylor with gold medal
Brett Taylor claimed gold in the Year 11 boys’ category at the British Rowing Indoor Championships in London.
He came up against 49 other young rowers, including Perse team-mates Robert Almqvist, Thomas Morris and Archie Bowman, in the event at Lee Valley Olympic VeloPark.
While other competitors went off rapidly, Brett kept up a steady pace and eventually took the lead.
He managed to cover 1,846 metres within the six-minute time limit – almost 30 metres further than his nearest rival.
Robert also made up ground as his heat wore on to finish a respectable 16th, having completed 1,692 metres inside the time.
Josh Stimson and Lucy Johnson represented The Perse in the Sixth Form boys’ and girls’ events, with the latter setting a personal best of 8min 00.1sec over the 2km distance.
Henry Yates, who only began rowing in September, rounded things off by taking part in the Year 10 boys’ race, based on distance covered within a five-minute time limit.
Head of Rowing Rebecca Stratton said: “This is a great, all-inclusive event where everyone can have a go from real beginners to the most experienced. The whole team gave their best.”
