Perse cross country teams qualify for national finals
The Perse will be well represented in the English Schools Cross Country Cup final after two teams qualified from the East Central regional final.
The format of the competition sees teams of six runners take part, with the top four athletes’ results counting towards each school’s overall score.
With the top three teams from each category going through, the Perse junior girls’ (Years 7 and 8) and intermediate boys’ (Years 9 and 10) finished third in their respective sections to earn spots in the national final at Sevenoaks School on November 25.
Running over a 2,300-metre course, the strength in depth of the junior girls’ team paid off with Rebecca West finishing 12th, Beatrice Rogers 13th, Charlotte Hamblin 15th and May Busher 22nd as the Perse junior girls’ have qualified for the national final for the first time.
The intermediate boys’ team raced over double that distance with Tom Blake and Ethan Seal coming third and fourth respectively to help push into a qualifying position.
Perse teams narrowly missed out on qualification elsewhere, with the junior boys’ and intermediate girls’ teams finishing fourth in their respective classes.
Jake Borrett and Hugh Ponder were third and fourth respectively in the junior boys’ race, run over a 3,000-metre course, but the team missed out on the final by just three points overall.
Lotti Knights was the pick of the intermediate girls’ team, finishing seventh in the 3,000-metre event.
