Perse rugby team edged out in thrilling NatWest Schools Cup tie
The Perse U15 rugby team put in a sterling effort in a narrow 33-29 defeat to Haileybury School in the NatWest Schools Cup.
Tom Blake gave the home side the perfect start by touching down before kicking the extra points for a 7-0 lead, only for Haileybury to go 12-7 ahead.
Isaac Pfaender crashed over the line to level for The Perse before grabbing his second try with a fantastic run down the left wing from just inside his own half. Tom Blake added the conversion to put the hosts 19-12 up.
The visitors hit back to hold a 26-19 advantage at the interval, but Isaac Barden scrambled over to reduce the deficit to two points.
Haileybury moved 33-24 in front, however Kimi Wilson-Brandtner had the final word with his try late on.
Head of rugby Liam St John said: “It was a tense game, and there were some great individual performances.
Tom Scott and Isaac Barden in the back row were superb. They put lots of pressure on Haileybury and we got a couple of tries out of that.
There were some great individual carries from Isaac Pfaender in the centres as well.
Schoolboy rugby at its best is open and expansive and there was no fear in the way the team played.
It was great to see two good teams going at it and there was plenty for the neutral spectator to watch and enjoy, but credit to Haileybury and good luck to them in the next round.”
