More Cambridgeshire titles for Perse girls’ hockey teams
5 Oct 2017
The Perse U12 and U14 girls’ hockey teams have followed in the footsteps of the girls’ first XI by claiming their respective Cambridgeshire schools’ titles.
The first team were crowned county champions last week and the U12 and U14 sides made it a hat-trick of triumphs at Cambs level for The Perse.
The U12 side clinched their county title in a round-robin tournament held at Saffron Walden County High School.
Each team played one another with the winners being the side that earned the most points overall.
Goals from May Busher and Eva Chivers clinched a 2-1 win in their opening game against Kimbolton School, but they were then held to a goalless stalemate by St Faith’s School and a 1-1 draw by the Stephen Perse Foundation, with Ellena Izzard on target for The Perse.
They got back to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over King’s School Ely thanks to a double from May Busher and followed it up by beating hosts SWCHS 1-0 with a strike from Lottie Smith.
Going into their last game against Joyce Frankland Academy Newport, the Perse girls knew they needed to win and score as many goals as possible to have a chance of claiming the title.
They did just that with an emphatic 6-0 triumph with goals from May Busher (4), Lottie Smith and Ellena Izzard with the points from their four wins and two draws enough to take the county honours.
The U14 girls followed it up by claiming their Cambs championship at Kimbolton, winning every game and keeping a clean sheet throughout.
They topped their group with convincing victories over JFAN (3-0, scorers Ava London and Bella Izzard 2), King’s Ely (4-0, Bella Izzard 2, Charlie Wombwell and Bella Howarth) and SPF (2-0, Bella Izzard and Bella Howarth).
The Perse met The Leys in the semi-finals and a goal from Bella Izzard was enough to claim a 1-0 success to set up a clash with Wisbech Grammar School in the final.
Strikes from Maddie Sennitt, Bella Izzard, Alex Pitchford and Bella Howarth helped them to a 4-0 win to take the county title.
They will now travel to Norwich in November for the regional rounds of the Investec Schools Championships.
