Perse girls’ hockey team crowned Cambridgeshire county champions
The Perse girls’ hockey first XI have won the Cambridgeshire schools’ title for the fourth year in a row.
In an incredible feat, the team also won every game at the tournament without conceding a goal, goalkeeper Sofia Baldelli keeping a clean sheet throughout.
The Perse topped their group in the pool stage, played at the Stephen Perse Foundation, setting the tone by beating Saffron Walden County High School 1-0 in their opening game thanks to a goal by captain Anna Traherne.
They followed it up with 2-0 victories against St Mary’s School (goals from Hannah Boston, Libby Gower Isaac), SPF (Flo Brimblecombe, Hannah Boston) and Wisbech Grammar School (Anna Traherne x 2) to qualify for the semi-finals.
There they met The Leys, who were hosting the knockout stages, and came through with a 2-0 triumph courtesy of strikes from Anna Traherne and Elizabeth Townsend.
The final saw The Perse take on Kimbolton School and they clinched the title with a 3-0 success with Anna Traherne, Natasha Stonebridge and Elizabeth Townsend all on target.
Assistant director of sport and head of hockey Jon Peckett was thrilled with the efforts of the team, which included Freia Gould making her comeback just two weeks after suffering a broken finger.
He said: “We’re very pleased. The team has trained hard and worked hard and it was a really good squad effort with everybody contributing to the victory.”
The Perse now go through to the East region round of the Investec Schools’ Championships at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, on 10 October.
