Perse Golfers Ace It
15 May 2017
Peter Anderson reviews recent Perse successes on the golf course.
It has been an excellent week for Perse Golf with victories in the ISGA Match Play Competition, the ISGA Junior League and, for the first time, emerging as winners of the Inter Schools Challenge Shield. On Tuesday, a very young Perse team of Oscar Earle (Year 9), Oliver Brunt (Year 8) and Will McKernan (Year 7), who was making his debut for the Senior side, defeated King’s Ely at Ely Golf Course 3-0 in the regional final of the ISGA Match Play Competition. This means they proceed to the ISGA National Plate Finals at Magnolia Park on 20th June. Special mention goes to Oliver Brunt, handicap 8, who scored a superb 37 points in the Stapleford format.
On Friday, The Perse hosted St Felix, South Lee, King’s Ely and Woodbridge School at Gog Magog Golf Course in the ISGA Junior League. The Perse team of Oliver Brunt and Oscar Earle, handicap 6, played some exceptional golf on the Wandlebury Course, scoring 3+ and Level Par respectively. With a handicap 36 Stapleford format, this meant The Perse team scored an outstanding 73 points combined for the front nine and 69 points for the back nine. This all but guarantees that the duo will progress to the finals of the ISGA Junior League, which will be played at Radley College on 21st June.
Then on Saturday, a Perse team of captain Oliver Brunt, Oscar Earle, Will McKernan, Michael Halton, William Dickens and Tim Ziegert won the Inter Schools Challenge Shield at Cambridge Lakes. This is the tenth year that the competition has been run and The Perse have finished second a number of times but have never won it. Yet with an overall score of nine points from four victories and a halved match, The Perse team emerged victorious. Special mention goes to Oscar Earle, whose score of 29 (+2) was the joint lowest score of the day, and Oliver Brunt, last year’s winner of the individual competition, who scored a very commendable 30 (+3). Many thanks as always to Cambridge Lakes and to James Burton, the golf professional at the club, for organising the event so successfully.
