Sixth Form student selected for England Rugby match against France
Lower Sixth student Alex Coles has been selected to play for England’s U17 Rugby squad on Saturday 22 April in their away game against France.
Playing in the School’s 1st XV team and for Northampton Saints, Alex expands his portfolio with the match against France on Saturday.
In anticipation of Saturday’s game, Alex commented, “It is a real honour to play for your country and it’s something I have been working towards throughout the year. It has been a race against time to get fit for this game with my hamstring playing up so I’m delighted to be ready now. It should put me in a good place for our upcoming tour with School to South Africa.”
Of Alex’s selection, Head of Rugby at The Perse Liam St John said, “This is a superb achievement for Alex and fully deserved on the back of an exceptional season for The Perse 1st XV, as well as his performances in the academy league for Northampton Saints. I know he has put in a lot of work behind the scenes and I’m so glad it has paid off for him. The game will be another great opportunity for him to show what he is capable of at that level.”
St John continued, “England Rugby should be commended for the pathway they’ve put in place for promising youngsters. I know Alex has really enjoyed the training camps he has been on and the rapport with the coaches there. They’ve put a great emphasis on their ‘C.A.R.D.S’ philosophy – developing players who are Creative, Aware, Resilient, Decision-makers and Self-Organising – and allowing players to express themselves without fear of making mistakes. It’s an environment that I know Alex has thrived in.”
The match kicks off at 17.00 at the Stade Jean-Laville, Gueugnon in France.
