County Cup triumph for Perse tennis players

Students from across the School have competed in the U18 County Cup.

The boys U18 team, featuring Perse pupils Vincent Chen (Year 11) , Alex Wardley (Year 12) and Sam Clark (Year 12), won their division. Though the girls’ team didn’t win, Year 9 student Megan, who played alongside other Year 9 student Charlotte, said it was a wonderful opportunity. “It was great to play against other counties such as Staffordshire, the Isle of Wight, Buckinghamshire and Hampshire as it gave me the opportunity to showcase tactics I’ve been working on, such as coming to the net more” said Megan.

Alex thought as a team the U18 boys worked well together, supporting each other – with constant clapping and cheering making for a great side-line environment. Vincent agreed, adding, “We’ve had four new players on the team recently so this opportunity really helped to build chemistry and a good rapport with one another.”

Megan, Alex and Vincent all cited their family as being great supporters and influencers in their decision to take up and then pursue tennis;  “I’d been playing tennis and enjoying it since I was five, but for my seventh birthday I was given a private lesson, and I loved it so started playing more seriously”, said Alex. Vincent and Megan had similar circumstances, where both their mums enrolled them in squads for fun, and upon realising their aptitude for the sport, they decided to take it further.

All three agreed that in the future they all want to try out for university-level tennis teams, with Vincent and Megan pushing for tennis scholarships to universities in the United States.
