U13 Rugby Sevens team triumphs again
The U13 rugby sevens side capped off an outstanding season by winning the Northampton Saints Elite Insurance Sevens. The squad has been unbeaten at both 15-a-side and 7s all season and has won all five competitions that they have entered, including the Cambridgeshire County Cup and the Cambridge Sevens. However, their victory in the Northampton Saints Sevens was certainly the highlight of the season and proved to be by far their toughest assignment.
Having comfortably won their pool matches against Aylesbury Grammar School and Marston Vale, the side came up against a very strong Colchester Royal Grammar School team in the semi-final. The Perse scored two fine tries in the first half, only to be pegged back to 10-10 at the beginning of the second half. An outstanding run by Isaac Pfaender, who carried the ball from his own 22 to the opposition 5 yard line, led to the decisive try as the ball was kept alive and worked back to Isaac who scored in the corner.
This led to the final against King Edward VI School, which was played in Franklin’s Gardens Stadium, the home of Northampton Saints RFC. Despite some nerves and falling behind to an early try, the side rallied and a breakaway try from Isaac Pfaender, who ran the full length of the pitch, won the game 7-5. Isaac deserves special mention for the eight tries he scored in the competition and for finishing the season with an incredible 93 tries for the school this year.
Team Coach Peter Anderson said: “The Perse U13 side have now won the Northampton Saints Sevens for the past two years, which is an outstanding achievement. Congratulations go to all the boys who have worked very hard in training since the start of the Lent Term. They are a superb side and it was great to see so much spirit and resilience, especially in their match against Colchester RGS.”
