A majestic moment

A special immersive theatre piece to mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death took place in the Loft this week.
Shakespeare’s Kings was set in an artist’s studio, where each of the eight performers from years 10 and 11 were frozen sculptures when the audience first arrived, coming to life to perform monologues from Shakespeare’s regal characters. From the princes Hal and Hamlet to the plotting usurpers of Richard III and Macbeth, the evening explored the glories of Shakespeare’s language and legacy with excellent solo performances as well as some intricate chorus work in which the group performed Shakespeare’s love-letter to his nation, John of Gaunt’s ‘This Sceptred Isle’.
In an unusual and exciting reconfiguration of the Loft space, Shakespeare’s Kings was an intimate evening of strong and thoughtful performances celebrating our most beloved national poet.
