Students reach semi-final of Student Investor Challenge
Budding stockbrokers from Years 10 to the Upper Sixth have once again been successful in the ifs Student Investor Challenge. The first round of the competition concluded last week, and five of the 38 Perse teams entered into the competition have qualified for the semi-finals, placing them in the top 500 teams out of the 10,000 that entered.
The first round was an online stock trading exercise, where teams invested a virtual £100,000 in stocks and other investment instruments over a three month period.
The Eagle Eyed Investors (Alex Rand, Elliott Howell, Peter Du and William Anderson), the Golden Griffins (Charlotte MacDowell, Jemima White, Lily Maynard and Lorna McBride), the Wall Street Dragons (George Doel, James Pitchford, Ollie Bartolo and Yanni Chatzikyriakos), the Pendeen Dragon Investors (Cameron Bhamra, Kevin Cai, Rahul Iyengar and Sam Doel) and the ‘Three Racketeers’ (Adil Webster, Alex Vale, Anokh Vithayathil and Henry Williams) all made it through to the next round of the competition, by successfully increasing the value of their stock portfolio. In the semi-finals, the teams will be awarded points for accurately predicting the closing price of certain assets on a weekly basis. If they are successful in this phase of the competition, they will have the chance to make it through to the national final in April, where an educational trip to New York is up for grabs.
Mr Jon Young, Head of Economics said:
“The successful teams have worked really hard to monitor corporate news and spot underpriced assets. In the current volatile markets they can be very proud of their achievement and can look forward to enjoying the semi-finals”
The ifs Student Investor Challenge is run by financial education charity ifs University College. It provides teams with two virtual investment portfolios of £100,000, where they are challenged to make both short-term and strategic trades.
