Music news round-up
23 Nov 2015
The run-up to Christmas is always a very busy time in the Music Department. A couple of wekends ago, Perse musicians got members of the Cambridge public into the festive spirit with a set of performances at the Grand Arcade as part of the Christmas light switch-on. The Sixth Form Jazz Band played on Saturday, while the Bevan String Quartet, Chamber Choir and Acappelicans performed on Sunday to several hundred spectators gathered on the three levels of the concourse. Wind Band 1 will return to serenade late-night shoppers on the afternoon and early evening of Wednesday 2 December.
Last Monday, we were treated to a masterclass and recital by the acclaimed young ensemble, the Doric String Quartet; while Wednesday saw the brass final of the Perse Musician of the Year under the experienced adjudication of Roger Argente, bass trombonist of the RPO. Many congratulations to Mikey Halton (Year 7), Freddie Van Der Most (Year 10), William Harmer (Year 11) and Lucy Howard (Year 11) who won their respective classes, as well as to Isabel Painter (Year 8) and Pip Jackson (Year 10) for coming highly commended. Lucy now advances to the grand final later in the year – we wish her the best of luck.
Another Perse pupil enjoyed sucess in the recent Cambridge Young Composer of the Year Competition – Upper Sixth student James Keeling’s Tundra for string quartet was commended by the judges and performed at West Road – very well done to James on this achievement.
We now look forward to several exciting events, not least the 400th anniversary concert in King’s College Chapel on Thursday 26 November Other dates for the diary include:
- Tuesday 24 November – a recital by Ric Elsworth (Head of Percussion) in the Music Department.
- Wednesday 2 December from 4.30pm – Wind Band 1 performance at the Grand Arcade.
- Thursday 3 December – percussion final of the Perse Musician of the Year.
