Music news round-up
The Music Department’s season of major concerts kicked off on Tuesday with a stunning chamber concert in the calm surroundings of the Emmanuel United Reformed Church. Thanks to all who performed in an entertaining and virtuosic evening of works by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven – and Senior Brass Dectet’s rendition of Chris Hazell’s Tubby Mousetrouser amongst others! On Wednesday, to mark Armistice Day, two of our trumpeters, Marcus Tuchel in the Upper Sixth and Sebastian Parton in Year 10 performed the Last Post and Reveille at ceremonies taking place at the Guildhall and the War Memorial respectively; Marcus’ performance was featured on a special report on the BBC’s Look East on the remembrance ceremonies taking place around the region.
We congratulate several pupils this week on some great achievements over the past few weeks and months. Oliver Cope in the Upper Sixth was recently awarded 98% in his recent Trinity Advanced Certificate harp exam. As part of the Cambridge Young Composers’ scheme, Year 9 pupil Stephanie Gaunt composed a calypso-infused piece called Independence for the Calypso Nation (or Calypaspendence) for the annual Composer of the Year competition which was commended by the judge and performed at West Road Concert Hall. William Harmer in Year 11 also had a new piano work, Drummer Hodge, performed at the Young Composers’ network concert in the Guildhall Chambers by Julian Trevelian, a recent BBC Young Musician of the Year keyboard finalist. William also won the Rickmansworth Young Musician competition on the piano earlier in the summer. Well done to all three pupils on these fantastic achievements.
