Music news round-up
22 Oct 2015
It has been a busy half-term of music making at The Perse, with hundreds of lessons taking place and countless music practices, performances and recitals taking place. Here’s a round-up of the last fortnight’s Music Department news.
A huge well done goes to all of those pupils who took part in Tuesday’s Perse Musician of the Year (PMOTY) singing final. It was another wonderful chance to hear the very best of The Perse’s singing talent, and our adjudicator Mr David Swinson was praiseworthy of the high standards of musicianship from Year 7 to Sixth Form. We congratulate the winners of the various classes: Maeve Halligan (Year 8) (beginner class), Pip Jackson (Year 10) (intermediate class) and Gabby Martin (Upper Sixth) (advanced class). Ishbel Hallam (Year 7), Matthew Chan (Year 9) and Anna Sutherland (Upper Sixth) also came highly commended. The PMOTY competition now looks to the brass family for the next leg of its journey: the final for this category will be held on Wednesday 18 November.
Three Perse pupils are to be congratulated for various successes over the past fortnight. Zak Cebon (Year 10) participated in the Jaques Samuel Junior Music Festival in London last weekend, and was among those chosen to perform in a concert at the Wigmore Hall on 1 November – he will be playing a movement from the Iberia suite by Albeniz. Matthew Dougherty (Year 11) won the title of ‘Suffolk Youth Vocal Champion,’ receiving a commendably high score for his rendition of ‘Stars’ from Les Miserables. Finally, Lisa Lukavsky (Year 10) has successfully auditioned for the double bass section of the National Youth Orchestra.
We look forward to our list of forthcoming events which include: a visit from the English Touring Opera company, presenting an ‘Opera in a Day’ workshop on Thursday 5 November; a brass masterclass with renowned tubist Oren Marshall from 1.20pm on Friday 6 November; our annual chamber concert at Emmanuel URC, on Tuesday 10 November at 7pm; the Perse Chamber Choir’s second outing to St. John the Evangelist Church, Hills Road, for evensong at 6pm on Wednesday 11 November; and a performance by the Perse Chamber Choir and the Acappelicans at the annual Grand Arcade Christmas light switch-on from 2pm on Sunday 15 November.
