Perse team reaches national final of Schools’ Challenge
Over the weekend, The Perse junior general knowledge team took part in the national final of the Schools’ Challenge general knowledge competition – a UK-wide competition based on University Challenge.
The team, comprised of Vikram Singh (Captain), George Salisbury, Rachel Bentham, Jude Burling, Edward Gaskarth and Henry Yates, took on Notttingham High School in the quarter-final, beating them 820 points to 410. In the semi-final, the team went on to defeat Our Lady’s Grammar School, Newry, with a score of 880 to the opposition’s 270 points. With two convincing wins in the previous two rounds, the team headed to the grand final against Dulwich Prep School. It was a very close match between the two teams, but thanks to a very fast player on the Dulwich side, the competition ended in a win for Dulwich with a score of 780 to The Perse’s 670 points.
It is particularly encouraging that three of Team Perse were Year 7 pupils – most schools usually field teams made up of Year 8 students.
In the past five years in Junior Schools’ Challenge Perse teams have been Nationals Champions three times and National Runners-up twice.
Well done to the team – to be crowned runners-up of this national competition is an excellent achievement.
