Music news round-up
Though exams and study leave have meant that the Music Department has become a little quieter recently, we look back on several musical successes, as well as looking forward to upcoming events after the internal exam week.
The big highlight of the past fortnight was undoubtedly the annual Choral and Chamber Concert at OLEM Catholic Church. All of the night’s concerto soloists (Rotimi Osindero, Flo Zolman, Hamish MacGregor and Timothy Woo (U6)) performed with aplomb, backed by the string and symphony orchestras, while Rosa Hirtzel (U6) led a brilliantly operatic rendition of the ‘Easter Hymn’ from Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana to see in the Bank Holiday weekend. Congratulations to all involved on a superb, professional evening! Yesterday saw Wind Band 2 play their annual fundraising lunchtime concert in Addenbrooke’s Hospital, in aid of the PIC unit – more details on this performance in next fortnight’s newsletter.
We congratulate Kilian Meissner (Y8), Colin Tuchel and Noo Rashbass (Y9) on their successful auditions for the Aldeburgh Young Musicians scheme – Colin and Noo as full members, and Kilian on the apprenticeship programme. Tom Roddis (Y8) has had a busy few months, playing The Junction, The Portland Arms, the Stortford Music Festival, and looking forward to future gigs at the Corn Exchange on Friday 22 May and the Saffron Walden Fete de la Musique. His Cambridge 105 FM Unsigned Chart Christmas Number 1 No Apology is still in the charts – and he is looking for some votes to keep it there. Tom Mullock (U6) sang with fellow vocalist Sophie Burrows (U6) and was backed by the Sixth Form Jazz Band, performing his arrangement of It Ain’t Necessarily So – you can listen to this fantastic performance below. Thank you to Ms Daphna Neu for her support of this exceptional group of musicians and friends, as well as to Mr David Wilkinson for recording the group.
After exam week, we look forward to the annual House Music Competition, which is a great chance for our Year 7-10 pupils to perform a piece in a solo capacity and support their house in the process. Last year 130 pupils took part. A reminder too of our Senior Chorale evensong, taking place on Wednesday 17 June at 6pm in St. John the Evangelist Church on Hills Road – featuring music by Smith, Dyson, Pitoni and Purcell.
