At the West Anglia Megafinal of the UK Delancey School Chess Challenge last weekend, our team of Prep pupils stormed to success.
Ten members of the Prep Chess Club qualified for the Megafinal through the School’s chess club – Joseph Bowler, Kumaresh Mahalingham, Ben Norman, Atul Bhardwaj, Mark Balon, Omer Shaukat, Lirit Dampier, Miles Cobley, Onder Tekin and Yuijan Zou.
In this round of the competition, entrants play six matches, and those who score a minimum of four points (1 point for a win, ½ point for a draw) then progress to one of two ‘Gigafinals’. All of the team played exceptionally well, with three Prep pupils qualifying for the Gigafinal – Yujian won the U10 category with six points, Ben came joint second in the U11 category with five points and Miles qualified for the Gigafinals in the U10 category.
Around 70,000 pupils from across the country enter this competition; with just 2,000 making it through to the Gigafinals, so this is an excellent achievement. We wish them the very best of luck in the next round of the competition, which take place in July.
