Senior golf team success
On Tuesday, the Perse Senior Golf team played Framlingham College in the regional final of the Independent Schools Golf Association Matchplay Tournament. Having beaten St Edmunds, Perse B and St Josephs en route to the final, the team were given the privilege of playing at Royal Worlington & Newmarket Golf Club, the home course of Cambridge University, which is regularly listed in the top 100 courses in Britain and Ireland.
The team, consisting of sixth formers Christie Woosey, Michael Pepper and Jamie Golding, had never played the course before, but got off to a fast start and were up in all of the games after 9 holes. Michael, who has a handicap of 6, won his match 3&2 after an excellent approach to the par 3 15th hole set up an easy two-putt par. Christie (handicap 12), who had been two down at one point in his match, ended up winning easily 4&3. Jamie’s (handicap 12) match went to the par 4 18th, and after a superb approach to 10ft he had two putts to win. He knocked his first effort 4ft past but kept his nerve to claim victory.
The side now advances to the National Finals on 26-27 April where they will play at Royal St. George’s in Kent, venue for The Open Championship on fourteen occasions and most recently in 2011 when Darren Clarke claimed the famous Claret Jug.
Good luck in the next round of the competition!
