Rowing for gold
10 Feb 2015
Last weekend, a group of eight Perse rowers attended the British Indoor Rowing Championships, held at the Lee Valley Velopark in London. The students – Garrett Shannon, Ben Conway, Andrey Nezhentsev, Sam Crawley, Annie MacDonald, Sophie Napier, Gayatri Mullaparthi and Ali Walker – each competed in categories by year group, with Year 10 students rowing for five minutes and Year 11 students rowing for 6 minutes, all trying to achieve the best distance they could in their allotted time.
To top off an excellent day of rowing, the group also had the chance to meet Olympic medallists Katherine Grainger, Debbie Flood and Sir Matthew Pinsent.
It was a fantastic experience for our students to attend a national event, particularly because some of the team have only been rowing since September; with some of the students achieving new personal bests. They all are determined to improve, with the aim of increasing their distances in time for the Junior Indoor Rowing Championships at the end of March. The group is looking forward to focusing their attention on the summer rowing season on the water.
